The 2008 Cartier Racing Awards have recently been announced in London. These awards were established in 1991 to recognise excellence in racing.

The system used to reach a decision in each of the categories is determined both statistically - and on opinion and popular vote:
40% of the final estimation is determined by points earned in Pattern Races.
40% of the final estimation is determined by the opinions of a panel of racing journalists.
20% of the final estimation is determined by votes from readers of the (British) Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.
The nominations this year - in each category - were as follows:
Cartier European Horse Of The Year
Raven’s Pass
Zarkava
Henrythenavigator
Duke Of Marmalade
New Approach
Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt
Bushranger
Crowded House
Donativum
Mastercraftsman
Naaqoos
Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly
Again
Aspen Darlin
Proportional
Rainbow View
Serious Attitude
Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt
Conduit
Henrythenavigator
New Approach
Paco Boy

Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly

Septimus
Yeats
Cartier Sprinter
African Rose
Borderlescott
Equiano
Kingsgate Native
Marchand D’Or
Cartier Older Horse
Darjina
Duke of Marmalade
Marchand D’Or
Yeats
Youmzain
And the winners were:
Horse of the Year—Zarkava
Two-year-old colt—Mastercraftsman
Two-year-old filly—Rainbow View
Three-year-old colt—New Approach
Three-year-old filly—Zarkava
Older horse—Duke of Marmalade
Champion sprinter—Marchand d’Or
Champion stayer—Yeats
I am in complete and full agreement with the title going to Zarkava. Her display from season beginning - to season end - was breathtaking. In my mind she retired as the best horse (in all countries and categories) in the world.
Of course the other three year old fillies had no chance of winning in that category with Zarkava present. So I must make a very honourable mention to Goldikova who certainly did enough in any other year (perhaps era) to win the three year old filly award.
And of course it irritates me to see one of my favourite horses - Henrythenavigator - go uncrowned. The three year old colt winner New Approach would be a closely contested (well debated) decision. At seasons end there were brilliant performances at the Breeders’ Cup meeting from Raven’s Pass, Henrythenavigator, and Conduit. Perhaps leaving Conduit out of selection for the best three year old colt as he is less adaptable than the other three - but I would still rate Henry as the best. New Approach claimed his prestige and accolades from his Epsom Derby victory - his season ending victories in the English and Irish Champion Stakes to my mind less impressive than beating home Curlin in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Raven’s Pass peaked as the season progressed and had a great battle with Henrythenavigator all year. But New Approach never beat Henrythenavigator at any time that they met. This was a very strong category - and the strength in the European three year olds such a brilliant standard and light-years ahead of the dubious North American three year old crop of 2008.
