Tale of Two Cities - The 2,000 Guineas & Kentucky Derby
May 3rd 2010 07:02
Sometimes it is not so bad being in the ‘wrong’ time-zone. Although I could have watched the 2,000 Guineas live - in the post-midnight early morning - it was very enjoyable to watch the taped English classic as an entree to the live (Melbourne time) breakfast showing of the Kentucky Derby. The contrast (over toast and tea) of the broad expanses of the green Newmarket racecourse - and the grey slush of a rain-sodden Churchill Downs. Same subject, different styles. The world of horseracing.

In England it was a French invader, the unbeaten Dubawi colt Makfi, the 33/1 longshot who would power away to win the 2,000 Guineas ahead of the valiant Dick Turpin who tried to lead all of the way - and seemed as though he had broken the hearts of all the chasers at one point, especially when the favourite St Nicholas Abbey was asked to respond, but could not. Makfi - a winner of the Prix Djebel leading up to this race - is bred to be a classic miler and the Derby winner may come from the likes of Canford Cliffs who closed well after not handling the run down the dip. Although St Nicholas Abbey is bred to be better suited by the staying trip his 6th finish today was more about holding on than running home strongly late.

In the US Calvin Borel (nicknamed Calvin Bo-Rail) won another (his 3rd) Kentucky Derby with yet another rail-hugging ride to steer Super Saver to an easy 2 1/2 length win over the fast finishing Florida Derby winner Ice Box. Borel went around only one horse - the tiring leader Conveyance. In winning today Borel also provided trainer Todd Pletcher with his long-awaited Kentucky Derby success. Pletcher has sent out 24 runners in the Kentucky Derby since 2000 - and this year saddled 4 starters.
Favourite, Lookin at Lucky, had no favours from his inside draw and came home well to finish 6th.

“Everyone kept saying we had one with our name written on it, but we didn’t take anything for granted. I’ve said before that Calvin is a great rider anywhere, but he’s five lengths better here at Churchill.”- Todd Pletcher, as told to Thoroughbred Times.
“I had him where I wanted him. I got him off the pace and he relaxed good. I learned a lot the last time [in the Arkansas Derby]. The first time I rode him, I won on the lead, but in the last race I took him back and learned a lot about him.”- Calvin Borel, as told to Thoroughbred Times.
