Galileo and Lloyd
September 11th 2010 01:50
Lloyd Williams has spent a fortune to stock his stable for an all out assault to win the 150th anniversary Melbourne Cup in 2010. Home grown stable star - and Melbourne Cup winner of 2007 - Efficient has already succumbed to injury and will not contest the 2010 Melbourne Cup. Williams has a stable full of impressive European horses, with the best performed of these being Cup topweight Alandi, who boast wins in races such as the Irish St Leger and Prix Du Cadran.

The first of these imported horses to win for Williams was the lesser-light Muir, a narrow winner of a minor 2100 metre race at Sandown Hillside last Wednesday. The 5 year old son of Galileo prevailed by only a nose over Packing Success, with Theraceison a further 1.8 lengths back in third placing. It was Muir’s third start in Australia and although not comfortable on the heavy 10 rated track the import held on bravely after kicking clear early in the straight.
Lloyd Williams has won the Melbourne Cup on three occasions: Just A Dash (1981); What A Nuisance (1985); and Efficient (2007).
Although it is obviously Williams’ plan to purchase well performed - and already qualified - European stayers to contest the Melbourne Cup, it is still his Australian bred stars in Linton and Rundle who are more fancied by bookmakers and punters at this stage. But it is no coincidence that both Linton and Rundle are - like Alandi, Muir, and Martial Law - all sons of Galileo. In fact Lloyd Williams has nearly 30 horses by the Champion Sire Galileo in his stable with trainer Robert Hickmott.
Other Lloyd Williams owned horses still in contention for the 2010 Melbourne Cup (with latest odds):
Linton ($21.00)
Rundle ($31.00)
C’Est La Guerre ($34.00)
Alandi ($41.00)
Zipping ($51.00)
Imposing ($51.00)
Mourayan ($61.00)
Muir ($101.00)
Akzar ($101.00)
Billson ($121.00)
Martial Law ($151.00)
Our Aristocrat ($151.00)
Irel ($401.00)
