Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Finally Lucky!

Well, not really. This time it was the absence of bad luck that enable Lookin At Lucky to win the (G1) Preakness Stakes.

In the Kentucky Derby his bad luck arrived with an inside barrier draw. And was compounded by a muddy track and chequered passage. But coming out in the second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico today he was settled beautifully by replacement jockey Martin Garcia just behind the speed - and uncluttered on the outside and in 6th position. Those ahead of him included Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver who sat outside leader First Dude.

Before the home bend Garcia had made his move out wide and flushed out Caracortado - both horses racing up to - and past - Super Saver who could not repeat his Kentucky Derby effort. Caracortado began to drop off not long after straightening and it appeared that perhaps Garcia had gone too early and would be a sitting shot for the closers - with Jackson Bend and Yawanna Twist emerging as challengers.

But not only was Lookin At Lucky staying on - the pacemaker First Dude was also not done with and was resolute in the run to the line.

Lookin At Lucky won by 3/4 of a length from First Dude in a time of 1.55.47.A head away in 3rd placing came Jackson Bend, with Yawanna Twist finishing 4th.
