Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Riding honours and training honours went to Steven Arnold and Mick Price respectively at the Moonee Valley night meeting held on the 17 February.

Steven rode the Ciaron Maher trained Magical King to a long awaited win in the Drummond Golf Plate over 2040 metres. The  former New Zealander had strung together five seconds and a third in his last six starts. This time, starting a $2.80 favourite, Magical King scored a well deserved maiden victory by 3.5 lengths.

Then, in the last race on the programme, Steven rode $7 chance Follonica to a half length margin over Invincible Lady. The 4yo bay mare is by Flying Spur and trained by Anthony Freedman.

Mick Price's two winners both went out favourites - Loveyamadly in the third race over 1000 metres - and Stratcombe in the fourth over 955 metres. Loveyamadly is a very promising 3yo bay filly by Bel Esprit. Ridden by Dale Smith, she got home by 3 lengths from Lady Antebellum.to score her second win from two starts. Prices other winner was Stratcombe, with Craig Newitt aboard and hot favourite at $1.80. The 4yo chestnut gelding by Stratum proved the odds pretty accurate, winning by over a length.from the handy Strike The Tiger.

Note that a feature photograph of Stratcombe, and more information, can be found on Thoroughbreds Worldwide.
