Golden Jubilee Stakes preview
June 21st 2008 03:12
The Golden Jubilee Stakes arrives today and has been a major topic and focus (in Australia) since the beginning of the Royal Ascot carnival.
Takeover Target ran a fantastic race on Tuesday in the King’s Stand Stakes, and much as Joe Janiak had stated all along, the 1000m was a shade too short and he could not quite pick up the winner. But the Golden Jubilee is a different race with 200 metres further to travel, and much more pressure expected. This suits his bulldog capacity to maintain a fast speed and close when others are faltering. He went equally as well in the King’s Stand Stakes this year as he had the previous year, and last year he would then go on to suffer a narrow defeat in the Golden Jubilee Stakes. Drawn well, loves the track, and should perform very well again.
I have been confident of the prospects of Seachange since her English campaign was planned. Her run in the Dubai Duty Free was full of merit, and horses she finished alongside (or just behind) have gone on to win major races at their next starts. She has an exceptional record sprinting after a let up, and the pressure nature of this race gives her stamina an opportunity to play an important impact. The stable has had the benefit of training her on the July track at Newmarket which had not been used for the past 12 months. The track condition was firm this morning, and they had even added water. The forecast for rain would be a disadvantage, but this is a very well drained track. William Hill has her at 16/1.
Last year’s winner Soldier’s Tale will be looking for more than a passing shower. He has not raced since, with firm tracks delaying his return to racing. He will not start if the track is firm. Whatever the outcome, he will soon be sent to Australia to start stud duties in the new season.
This is a race with great depth. The 9/2 favourite is Sakhee’s Secret who was top rated European Sprinter last year. Equal second favourite (with Takeover Target) is Marchand D’or at 5/1. He produced a brilliant return to racing this season when beating subsequent King’s Stand Stakes winner, Equiano, at Chantilly.
Or could Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh add to their long list of Group One victories with this sprinting prize? US Ranger is newly into his stable after transferring from French trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. He was undefeated at his first four races before failing later in the season when contesting classic races over the mile. Switched back to sprinting and his closing 4th in the Duke Of York Stakes was very encouraging and bookmakers now quote him at 13/2 for this feature.

This race, the richest sprint in Europe, has attracted nine Group One winners from all parts of the world.
