Alexander Of Hales is a new inclusion into the stable of Danny O’Brien and is one of the highest ranked horses in betting for the Melbourne Cup.

This 4 year old son of Danehill was purchased by a group headed by American bloodstock agent David Bernsen who sent Honor In War to Australia in 2006. Although not immediately successful, Honor In War defeated Takeover Target in the Group Two Villiers Stakes in January and validated the decision to send him to Australia by gaining some prestige on the racetrack, and dramatically increased his potential as a stallion.
Alexander Of Hales has only raced on six occasions and has won over half a million dollars from his two wins and placings. His wins were in a maiden over 2000m at Naas, and a victory in the Group 3 Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes over 2000m at The Curragh. It is his placings that make him most interesting, with a 2nd in the Irish Derby and a 2nd in the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf behind English Channel (American Champion Male Turf Horse 2007).
Aidan O’Brien trained Alexander Of Hales in Ireland and landed the Irish Derby trifecta after the brilliant Soldier Of Fortune cleared out to win by nine lengths from Alexander Of Hales. In third place was the favourite runner from Ballydoyle, Eagle Mountain.
Alexander Of Hales held a forward position in the Irish Derby and in the latter stages (after Soldier Of Fortune had sprinted clear) he came over the heels of runners to get to the outside and narrowly put his more favoured stablemate into 3rd placing. Soldier Of Fortune is currently rated as the equal 10th best horse in the world. In the latest betting for the 2008 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Soldier Of Fortune is equal favourite with (Epsom Derby winner) New Approach and star French Filly Zarkava.
It was initially thought that he could be a top miler or middle-distance horse in Australia. but his placing in the Irish Derby have him qualified for the Melbourne Cup and his brilliance could prove an asset under Australian racing conditions.
Alexander Of Hales will be syndicated and retired to stud after the 2008-2009 racing season with Bernsen’s Carondelet Farm maintaining a sizeable stake.
He will begin his Spring program in either the Liston or Craiglee Stakes in August.
He is by Danehill and out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Legend Maker. This makes him line bred 3 x 3 to Norther Dancer.
Curiosity note:
Alexander Of Hales (from history) was a medieval scholastic theologian who died in 1245.
