She Will Always be a Princess

Thoroughbreds Worldwide welcomed Vicki L. Vinson to the list of contributors this week when she submitted an article and photograph about Always A Princess. This is now a shared publication between both sites.
March 12, 2011 - Early on the card this day was the 74th running of the Santa Margarita Invitational Grade I race. A field of talented fillies and mares were filing onto the track, not knowing what lay in store.
Always a Princess first time by the stands in the Santa Margarita
The post time favorite was Switch, followed by St. Trinians and Always a Princess. Always a Princess had won her last two races on the Santa Anita oval; this would be her fourth start on the track this season where she had gained such popularity.
Half way down the stretch it was obvious something was wrong with Always a Princess as jockey Martin Garcia tried to pull her up. But she was one of those who did not want to give up without a fight. She collapsed to the ground right by the finish line. You could hear a pin drop as the fans held their breath, followed by gasps as she laid motionless on the track. They brought out that dreaded green blanket to screen the horse from view of the fans. To a knowledgeable horse fan along the rail, it appeared the vet working on Always a Princess applied pressure to her hip area as if to get it back in place. A moment later she got back up on her own and a sigh of relief came from the crowd.
It was discovered Always a Princess had cracked both sesamoids on her left front ankle. She had surgery at the Equine Medical Center in Cypress, CA this past Monday. The surgery was deemed a success and she was able to walk to her stall on her own. It was reported on HRTV’s Race Day America show that she was being a model patient, laying down to rest and sleep. She is still a “Princess” in the eyes of her fans.
