Bauer and the Ebor
August 16th 2008 07:07
The OTI Racing Syndicate (Simon O'Donnell and Terry Henderson) are likely to have a strong hand in this year's Melbourne Cup. Primarily with the highly rated VRC Derby winner Kibbutz (hoping lightning strikes twice after the drought was broken by Derby winner Efficient last year), and also with Perth Cup winner Cats Fun.
The third member of this three-pronged attack on the Melbourne Cup is the English stayer Bauer, who is favourite to win next week's Ebor Handicap under the care and planning of Luca Cumani. OTI bought Bauer in England - as they had previously with Hug's Dancer and Short Pause - but elected this time to leave the horse in the care of his English (based) trainer Luca Cumani rather than transfer to a local trainer. Luca Cumani has nominated a large entry for the Melbourne Cup, and seems certain to arrive with more than one prospect for success.
BAUER (IRE) 5-y-o (18 Apr 2003) gr h
Trainer: L M Cumani Owner: Aston House Stud & O T I Racing
Breeder: Aston House Stud
Halling(USA) (10.4f) - Dali's Grey (Linamix (FR )(10.8f))
2nd living foal, half-brother to Batik, a triple 10-12f winner at 3-4; dam a winner in France, half-sister to Diamonixa, a high-class 11f winner at 3 in France and Diamilina, a high-class 10-13f winner at 3.
The Ebor Handicap (run 22nd of August) is a premier English staying race and a strong guide to the Melbourne Cup. Luca Cumani has the equal favourite Bauer (equal at 7/1 with Young Mick); second favourite Mad Rush at 8/1; and Sanbuch at 12/1.
The Ebor is run over 1 mile 5 furlongs and 197 yards and was won in 2007 by Luca Cumani with subsequent Melbourne Cup runner-up Purple Moon. In 2003 Hugs Dancer was successful and in 2000 Give The Slip was the winner. Give The Slip was later to be trained by Godolphin and be runner-up in the Melbourne Cup of 2001 when caught near the post by Ethereal after leading for almost all of the trip.
Bauer is a five year old (European time) grey horse by Halling who has now won 5 times from 15 starts, with 3 seconds and 1 third. He has raced 3 times (before the looming Ebor) this year and last start was second to stablemate Sanbuch in the 1 mile 6 furlong Detica Summer Stakes Handicap at Goodwood.
A quote from racingpost after the event:
"Bauer, who followed his stablemate through, could not match his speed into the final furlong but kept on well and will take up the Ebor option. Coming off an 81-day break since his Group-race fifth, he was halved in price to 8-1 by Hills and Paddy Power and Totesport made him 7-1 favourite."
Previous to this Bauer was unplaced in the Group Three Blue Square Ormonde Stakes at Chester (I mile 5 1/2 furlongs) behind fellow Melbourne Cup aspirant Macarthur.
Bauer has won from 10 furlongs to 15 furlongs and all wins have been on good (to firm) tracks.
Quote from 2007 (before purchase by OTI):
01 Sep 2007 Chester (13GF,RPR103)
"He's a lovely horse, very tough and very genuine, and I'd say you could do anything with him now." - Eddie Ahern, jockey.
"We wanted him to win a black-type race, as we've still got the dam Dali's Grey, and we've also got her Selkirk colt in the first part of the Tattersalls October Yearling sale. The hope with Bauer is that he could be good enough for Group races in the autumn." - Tony Chapman [owner]
Entered for:
20 Aug 2008 3:25(Four Day) at YORK, totesport Ebor (Heritage Handicap)
13 Sep 2008 3:20
(Five Day) at CURRAGH, Irish Field St Leger (Group 1)
And some insight into both Bauer and Sanbuch from the Cumani stable:
"A successful start to the five days of Glorious Goodwood
With six runners today it would have been disappointing not to have a winner but we emerged with one winner and two seconds hopefully setting the tone for the next few days.
It was Sanbuch who obliged in the 1m6f Detica Summer Stakes and was chased home by Bauer half a length behind him. The race was an ideal target for the pair of them and while it is frustrating to have one of your horses beat the other it is pleasing to see them both run such good races. Sanbuch is one of the more intelligent members of his species and unless asked to work he does not see the need for it. Today's blinkers were fitted to help Ryan Moore get the horse around the first mile and half and he needed only to get serious with him in the last two furlongs. It was sad to see Black Rock break down in the last furlong and you cannot guarantee that we would have beaten him, lets hope he makes a full recovery.
It looks like Bauer will now be the more likely candidate for the Ebor because he will escape the four pound penalty that his stablemate will receive for winning today. It is great to see him back on song today and it shows that he really does only find his form later on in the season for one reason or another." - Francesca Cumani
And finally a quote from the UK Guardian on the Wednesday following last year's Melbourne Cup. Long range plans indeed:
"The Cumanis intend to be represented in next year's Melbourne Cup, but hope that handicaps will be a thing of the past for Purple Moon by then. Cumani revealed that, after "a nice, easy winter," the chestnut's target will be the Gold Cup at next summer's Royal Ascot meeting.
As for the Australian race, "We've got two in the pipeline," Cumani said, with Bauer the most likely to take part. "He might have gone this year but the owner wanted to run at Newbury. Next year, it's the race he wants to go for."
