Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The final leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series - the 1400 metre Hong Kong Group One Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup - was run last Sunday at Sha Tin racecourse.

Gerald Mosse has Beauty Flash clear of Sunny King

The winner was the Tony Cruz trained Beauty Flash (Gerald Mosse) who was dropping in distance from his victory in the Hong Kong Group One The Stewards’ Cup (1600 metres) at his previous start.

The Stewards’ Cup quinella of Beauty Flash and Sunny King repeated again with these two quality horses separated by a half length or less on both occasions. In third placing was favourite Lucky Nine who was dropping from the 1800 metres of the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Cup (2nd to Ambitious Dragon) at his previous start.

With each leg rising by 200 metres in distance it is no surprise to find the third leg dominated by horses who had not featured in the earlier legs. This third leg was contested by only two horses coming from the pure sprint trips of 1000 metres and 1200 metres. One World repeated his 4th from the (2nd leg) The Chairman’s Sprint Prize after placing 5th in the 1000 metre first leg (The Centenary Sprint Cup) behind Sacred Kingdom. Brave Kid - the other horse to compete in each leg of the HK Speed Series - could finish no closer than 5th in any race of the series.

The only horse capable of navigating the difficulties of rising from a helter skelter 1000 metres, to the tricky ‘in-between’ distance of 1400 metres, has been the Champion Sprinter Silent Witness - capturing all three legs in 2005.
