Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings - Leonard Marlborough.

Beholder Wires the BC Juvenile Fillies

a contribution for Thoroughbreds Worldwide & RacingWrite by Vicki L Vinson

It was just a couple weeks before the Breeders’ Cup and even seasoned trainer Richard Mandella was not certain which race he should enter Beholder in. She had flashed a lot of speed in her earlier races but since her last race at Del Mar she had not seemed to settle back down. Consequently he passed on running her in the Chandelier at 1 1/16 miles on Breeders’ Cup prep day at Santa Anita and instead opted to keep her at the sprint distance of 6 furlongs in an allowance race on Oct 4th. She won that race with ease and Mandella still was struggling with the decision so cross entered Beholder in both the Juvenile Fillies and the Juvenile Sprint where she would take on the colts. Finally acting on advice from his wife Mandella decided to race Beholder in the Juvenile Fillies hoping she could stretch herself out for the longer distance and for at least this race it appears to have been the right decision.

Drawing the rail in the race may have been the winning factor as that combined with her natural early speed enabled Beholder to grab the early lead away from the other speed horses Executiveprivilege just outside of her and Kauai Katie on the extreme outside. Beholder began opening up on the final turn all the while hugging the rail.

After that move jockey Gomez said Beholder seemed to flatten out and he was pulling out the tricks of the trade to help his horse find a little more. As he hit her with a left handed whip a couple times most spectators probably thought that was what saved the day. But by then half way down the stretch the other horses were catching up to Beholder and it was at this time jockey Gomez said he could feel Beholder picking it up again as her competitive spirit kicked into stride. Executiveprivilege would come the closest to catching the leader but drifted out coming down the lane as she had shown a tendency to do in previous races.

Beholder held on to win by one length over Executiveprivilege with Dreaming of Julia getting up for the show. Beholder is by Henny Hughes who as a two year old was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile out of the dam Leslie’s Lady and is owned by Spendthrift Farm. The Juvenile Fillies win gives Beholder a record of 5-3-1-0 while giving her her first Grade 1 win.
