Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Bel Sprinter

The exciting 4 year old son of Bel Esprit, Bel Sprinter, remains undefeated after four career starts.

Trained by Jason Warren, and ridden on each occasion by Ben Melham, the bay gelding has risen from a lowly Mornington Maiden victory on debut in December, to return from a spell in July and go straight into metropolitan grade races. Bel Sprinters’s first up run this campaign saw him sweep home from near last at Moonee Valley to win over 1000 metres, before leading all-the-way to win over 1100 metres at Flemington 3 weeks later. On both occasions he beat home the very consistent and highly talented General Truce.

At Caulfield on the 13th of August Bel Sprinter stepped up into Listed company and left in his wake a field that boasted many Listed and Group Winners - including the Group One Winner Eagle Falls who won the Oakleigh Plate (1100 metres at Caulfield) earlier this year.

Bel Sprinter’s rise to prominence has been impressive. And still he has more improvement to come. His first two starts he was a back-marker - while at his past two victories he has displayed dazzling speed. He is expected to be at his best when able to stalk the speed, but his early gate speed has seen him in front at his most recent starts.

Such was his performance two starts back that Speedratings recommended him as a standout selection for Caulfield. Bel Sprinter firmed from $4.00 into a starting quote of $3.20.
