Ben So is another talented apprentice riding in Hong Kong who has gained benefit from the experience of riding in Australia before returning home to establish a successful career.
Ben So - now 24 - has been indentured to the stable of Peter Ho since becoming licensed as a jockey in Hong Kong in 2008. So began his career in Western Australia in the stable of Shane Edwards (trainer of 2011 Perth Cup winner Guest Wing) and in two season from 2007 to 2009 rode 13 winners.
Immediately upon returning to Hong Kong So made an impact and was third in a tight battle for the Hong Kong Apprentices’ Championship in 2009/10 (won by Keith Yeung). His biggest win to date has been in the 2010 Group 3 Premier Plate aboard local champion Mr Medici.
At Happy Valley this week Ben So rode his first treble - all for master Peter Ho. Of most interest to the wider racing community was his win on Handsome Zulu in the 1650 metre D’Aguilar Peak Handicap. This was Handsome Zulu’s first win in Hong Kong from 7 starts since arriving from New Zealand in 2010 as a multiple stakes-placegetter. Handsome Zulu's peak performance was his 3rd in the Group 1 2010 New Zealand Derby (2400 metres) behind Military Move.
Purchased to race in Hong Kong by local movie star local Natalis Chan, Handsome Zulu’s early inability to recapture his best form displayed in New Zealand was primarily a result of taking time to overcome the effects of an injury suffered to his right fore tendon sheath. In recent outings Handsome Zulu had been pitted against the best horses in Hong Kong, with his previous start an unplaced run in the Group 1 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic (1800 metres) behind Ambitious Dragon. A proven stayer, Handsome Zulu is now being aimed at the Hong Kong Derby.
And the good news for apprentice Ben So is that trainer Peter Ho has confirmed that he will keep his ride - if he makes the field, this not yet a certainty - in the Hong Kong classic on March the 20th.

Handsome Zulu did take his place in the Hong Kong Derby - finishing a distant 11th behind Ambitious Dragon - and ridden by Mark Du Plessis.
