Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

One of the most impressive winners at Caulfield on the 17th of April was the Robert Smerdon trained Beyond Pardon who won the Bettfair Plate ($70,000 - 1400 metres) by two and a half lengths. Robert Smerdon selected this horse at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale (vendor Chatswood Stud) and paid - what now appears to be a bargain amount - only $48,00.

The stable learnt a lesson from his previous start when Dwayne Dunn relinquished the lead to (Crystal Lily’s half-brother) Amaethon at the same track - over the same distance - who then dictated from the front and went away to defeat Cavendish by 1.3 lengths, with Beyond Pardon 2.5 lengths from the winner in 3rd placing. This time apprentice Jack Hill was aggressive from the outside gate and Beyond Pardon cleared the field and dominated from the front - going away to win by two and a half lengths from Cavendish, with Amaethon this time in 3rd placing. Same trifecta - but different order.

Beyond Pardon has now had 10 starts for 2 wins (his other on debut in a 2 year old Maiden) and 5 placings - with $113,631 in prizemoney.

The only time Beyond Pardon has missed a finish in the first four placegetters was on a heavy track at Sandown Hillside at his second race start - and even then he found tons of trouble after being slowly away and was only beaten three and a half lengths by the very promising Briefed.
