Smiling Tiger ran out an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, run over 6 furlongs at Del Mar on the synthetic Polytrack. Smiling Tiger is the first Group/Grade 1 winner for Swettenham Stud's popular young shuttle stallion Hold That Tiger.

This dashing front-running win mirrored Smiling Tiger’s best previous performance, a win in the Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes at Hollywood Park on the 22nd of May. Smiling Tiger was able to dictate quick, though comfortable fractions, running the half-mile in 44.62, before coming home a winner by 1 1/2 lengths in the time of 1.09.21.
The long-term aim for Smiling Tiger is the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs in November.
Also on a path to the Breeders’ Cup will be the runner-up, Scenic Blast, now trained in the US by John Shirreff. Scenic Blast is the 2008-2009 Australian Horse of the Year and Australian Champion Sprinter. Scenic Blast is an exciting sprinter, although worth noting is the fact that his best sprinting performances have been on straight tracks, with his rating as Champion Sprinter and Champion Horse built on his 2009 straight track victories in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, plus the Lightning Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.
After two promising performances in the US, now racing on Lasix after being banned for bleeding at Sha Tin last December, Scenic Blast appears to be on an improving path. Still underdone, and having his first start on the synthetic dirt track, Scenic Blast looked a strong winning chance just after straightening for home, but was eventually well held in the run to the line by a very talented sprinter in peak form.
