Caviar

The World Champion Sprinter Black Caviar remains undefeated after easily winning the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200 metres) at Moonee Valley last week.
The winning margin and ultimate ease of victory was very typical for the brilliant mare, now having won four Group 1 races in succession, and amassing career earnings of $2.6 million - but the end result came from a very atypical transit, with Black Caviar wide and off the speed after surprisingly missing the start by half a length, and ultimately being asked to quicken by jockey Luke Nolen at the 500 metre mark. Normally she leads (or shares the pace) and her rivals fall away from her like leaves falling from trees in autumn as she imperceptibly quickens - but this time at Moonee Valley the stunning acceleration was more than obvious as she found top gear and was made to circled and pass the duelling leaders, Crystal Lily and True Persuasion. And then the traditional Black Caviar 100 metre final stroll to the winning post.
A full sequence of photographs of Black Caviar, from pre-race parade to returning to a cheering crowd after her win, is available on Thoroughbreds Worldwide this week (link below). Along with the rest of the article above - plus the dramatic Sunline Stakes and ensuing protest.
