Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Determination and Blind Luck

May 1st 2010 05:25
It was not so much blind luck that prevailed in the 2010 Kentucky Oaks - but determination instead.

Brilliant filly Blind Luck - a 6-5 favourite - came from the tail of the field to wear down Evening Jewel by a nose right on the line. Jockey Kent Desormeaux, rider of runner-up Evening Jewel, came close to providing the second upset result of the day after he earlier steered Unrivaled Belle to a narrow victory over reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in the LaTroienne Stakes.

Blind Luck is a renowned closer - and even allowing for this her task did look extremely difficult as they turned for home in the Oaks.

"I knew she was going to kick for me and show me that run. She always does. She tries so hard. The stretch here is very long, but she kept trying hard until the end. She never stopped trying. She's amazing." - jockey of Blind Luck, Rafael Bejarano, as reported to AP.

"It was tense for a few minutes waiting, but I thought we got it on the head bob. A great ride by Rafael got her there." - trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, as reported to AP.
