Buccellati

Mornington trainer Tony Noonan has his long term project horse Buccellati in Queensland in the warmth, acclimatising to the southern hemisphere while still enjoying temperatures that would mimic his European (English) Summer. Buccellati is presently in pre-training with Michella Lang at Logan Village, south of Brisbane.

Noonan and long-time client Peter McMahon purchased Buccellati at a Tattersalls sale in England in 2005. Respected English trainer Andrew Balding was also part of the pedigree analysis and yearling inspection process and had been his trainer since his racetrack debut, guiding the chestnut son of Soviet Star to international success across many countries and continents. The 6 year old has raced 26 times and won 8 times, with appearances in England, France, Canada, Hong Kong, and Turkey.

The twin objectives for Buccellati in the Spring of 2010 are the WS Cox Plate (Group One) run over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley, and the VRC Melbourne Cup (Group One) run over 3200m. Buccellati would be considered to have a middle-distance pedigree by European standards, though he has been successful when stretched out to 2681 metres with a victory in 2009 in the Group Three Ormonde Stakes at Chester. If Buccellati runs well in the Cox Plate then the 3200m of the Melbourne Cup would not seem too much of a stretch.
Buccellati also boasts a victory at 2405 metres at Newbury in 2008 in the St Simon Stakes at Newbury. Starting 3rd favourite he defeated Blue Monday, a horse well known in Australia after finishing 4th in the 2007 Caulfield Cup behind Master O’Reilly - then finishing 7th in the Melbourne Cup won by Efficient. Finishing unplaced in the St Simon Stakes was Group One winner Ask (2009 Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom - with Youmzain 2nd).
Another significant victory would be the 2008 Listed Godolphin Stakes over 2400m at Newmarket, relegating to second place Speed Gifted, who would thereafter be transferred to Lee Freedman in Australia and impress all and sundry with his Group One victory in The Metropolitan Handicap of 2009 - and a 3rd in the 2010 Group One Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill behind Theseo and Rangirangdoo.
Seldom do we get an import into Australia with such an easily identifiable form history. And given his Australian ownership it feels as though he has been away at boarding school rather than being an invader from another country as he begins his first preparation on Australian soil.
