Cat’s Pyjamas is a very impressive filly trained by leading trainer Mark Kavanagh. She took her record to 2 wins from 2 starts with her narrow, but impressive win in the $70,000 7-Eleven Cath White Memorial Handicap (1100 metres) at Caulfield on Saturday. This win comes 4 weeks after her winning debut at Bendigo when she easily accounted for a field of Maidens over 1100m after being held up in running - then sprinting clear for a 1.8 length win. On Saturday at Caulfield she met a far harder field which included multiple metropolitan-winning filly Gibraltar Moon.
Jockey Stephen Baster positioned her just behind the speed and when she found daylight in the straight she dashed clear - and although runner-up Tarp closed strongly she was still able to prevail at the finish.
Cat’s Pyjamas was passed in at $210,000 (reserve of $250,000) at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. This impressive filly is a full sister to the outstanding mare Cats Whisker - a winner of 6 races, with 4 placings, from her 13 career starts - and prizemoney of $595,800, before a premature retirement last Spring curtailed a blossoming career destined for even greater heights.
Cats Whisker was the top rated horse by Speedratings when she won (what was to be) her final race start in October 2009 (at $8.00) defeating by three-quarters of a length Gold Water, with Dane Julia 3rd and Neroli 4th. In 5th position was champion mare Hot Danish. I rated Cats Whisker as one of the top mares in Australia. At her only start at Group One she was 2nd in the 2008 Thousand Guineas behind Gallica. She had 2 wins at Group Two - with another 2 placings at that level - along with a win at Group Three. Her only unplaced run at Group level was at her 3rd race start when she was galloped on and pulled up lame. An outstanding mare who had the potential to rise to even loftier heights had she not gone amiss on the same day that Kavanagh also lost champion Maldivian to injury.
Since retirement Cats Whisker has been served by boom sire Fastnet Rock. Their dam - Perfect Halo - produced a half-sister to the pair when she foaled a filly by Haradasun.
Although the speedfigures for Cat’s Pyjamas are only moderate at present I look forward with anticipation to see if she can emulate the deeds of her extremely talented sister.
