Caulfield Trainers

Caulfield trainers tend to dominate when meetings are held at their home track. Last Wednesday at Caulfield several races were named in honour of local trainers. And the dominantion continued - even extending into some trainers winning 'their own races'.

Trainer's Day at Caulfield
A disappointingly small crowd turned up for Caulfield's latest mid-week meeting (15 December). A pity, because it was an interesting day's racing. Most of the interest centred on four Caulfield based trainers - Peter Moody, Mick Price, Robert Smerdon and Tony Vasil. Each had the honour of a race being named after them. And except for Mick Price, each had a horse running in their respective name race.
Peter Moody set the pace by training the winner of the second race, the Peter Moody Handicap over 1800 metres. Luke Nolen on Lord Pindari held off the hard chasing favourite, Field Master. Michelle Payne looked to have the race in her keeping at the top of the straight on Fieldmaster but a had lot of trouble keeping the gelding's mind on the job in the chase to the line, and Lord Pindari just held on to win.
In the fourth race, the Mick Price Handicap over 1100 metres, Robert Smerdon took the honours with the heavily supported Val's Boy, ridden by Peter Mertens. But in his own race, Robert's entrant, Marsh Harbour was well supported in betting but could only manage a fourth place. Emily's a Star took out the race comfortably. In the final race, the Tony Vasil Handicap over 1440 metres, there was plenty of late money for Tony's entrant, The Wingman, with Peter Mertens aboard. The Wingman got home by a half length from the favourite Zizz to have Tony join Peter Moody the honour of winning his own name race.
