Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Chris Symons- Lucky Eleven.

by Neil Murray

A shared article between Thoroughbreds Worldwide and RacingWrite.

Chris Symons is one jockey who always seems good humoured and impresses as one who really enjoys his job. He's ever ready with a smile and a hello to the punters  and kids lining the fence as he trots his mount to the start. But when it gets down to racing, he means business, as attested by his riding record. Currently though, Chris is stuck with the number eleven. He's eleventh on the metropolitan jockey premiership, eleventh on the country jockey premiership, and eleventh on the total number of Victorian wins so far this season. And last Saturday at Flemington, the second of a winning double for Chris was - yes you guessed it -  number eleven, Eclair Mystic.

The first of Chris's winning double came in the fourth race on the card, the Cleanevent Handicap over 2500 metres.  Chris  in a classy ride brought  Buttheresmore outside the leading pair, Titus Vinius and Interlocking, to get home by a nose on the line. Lots of interest centred on his ride in the next race, the Red Tempo Handicap. The race had Toorak Toff first up in his new campaign for Rick Hore-Lacy. It also featured the well fancied Secret Flyer and Broken. Soon after the jump, the field split in two; half to the outside, including Toorak Toff and Secret Flyer; and half sticking to the inside, including Chris Symons on Eclair Mystic and third placegetter, Broken. The inside group led all the way. Eclair Mystic grabbed the lead inside the 100 m and pulled away for a half length victory. The win was all the more meritorious because the gelding is reported to have  lost a plate and pulled up lame.

A nice day's riding for Chris and maybe he'll now move up off that eleventh place in the jockey rankings.
