Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Black Armband for Reece

photography and words by Neil Murray

On Saturday March 12, 2011, twenty-three year old jockey Reece Potter died tragically as a result of a race fall at the Tottenham picnic races in New South Wales. He sustained severe head injuries after his mount broke down and fell. Reece was air lifted to a Sydney hospital, but his life could not be saved.

The following Saturday at race meetings all round Australia jockeys wore black armbands in one selected race as a mark of respect for Reece. At Caulfield, this race was the Lu Simon Builders Handicap over 1600 metres. Jockey Chris Symons won the race on the Greg Eurell trained She's Gifted, who hung on gamely after hitting the front for a short neck victory. Fittingly, in an interview after his win, the well respected and articulate Symons paid tribute to Reece Potter and sent condolences to the Potter family.

The episode serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers jockeys face every time they go onto the track.
