Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Christophe Soumillon's Great Adventure

June 22nd 2010 01:10
Christophe Soumillon has been crowned as Champion Flat Jockey in France on three occasions. He was also French Champion Apprentice. His stellar career has produced two victories in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe - on Dalakhani and Zarkava. He has ridden Dylan Thomas; Paco Boy; Hurricane Run; Viva Pataca; Good Ba Ba; and Shirocco to Group One victories in Europe, Asia, and the US.

But not content with being one of the best jockeys of his era, Christophe is still exploring new horizons. Last weekend Christophe Soumillon had only his 2nd career race ride over obstacles - and won the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil (French Champion Hurdle) a Group One jumping event over 3 miles 1 1/2 furlongs at Auteuil in France aboard Mandali. So far was the winning margin that it was classified as a distance. Soumillon took Mandali to the front and remained there for the duration of the race. The seasoned jumps riders obviously thinking that he had misjudged the pace, leaving him to lead by an ever increasing margin. It was only the Thursday prior that Christophe rode over jumps for the first time.

Perhaps it is the fact that Christophe is the son of the jumping jockey Jean-Marc Soumillon that increased his desire to ride over obstacles. But it is more difficult to explain his passion for trotting horses which he regularly drives at the Vincennes racetrack.

It seems that Christophe has an adventurous spirit when it comes to horses.
