Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

What can you get for $1.2 million?

Perhaps a Caulfield Guineas - followed by lucrative offers to stand at stud.

Last Saturday the David Hayes trained Columbus made his racetrack debut at Flemington with a very impressive victory in the 1000 metre Von Costa De Hero Handicap. Brad Rawiller settled the impressive looking colt midfield and he was always travelling smoothly. At the midway point he was just in front of talented filly Magic Of Emma - but when Rawiller asked him to lengthen he left her in his wake and quickly gathered in his rivals to come away for a soft one length win over Liveandletdie - with Oregon Spirit in third position.

Columbus is a brother to the brilliant sprinter Kaphero - who already stands at Swettenham Stud at Nagambie for $11,000. Both brothers are outstanding individuals to look at - though it does appear that the younger brother will be very efficient at distances beyond 1200 metres, unlike the sprinting specialist Kaphero.

Although I began this article with a monetary riddle, the accuracy of the purchase price of some yearlings sold at premier sales can be rather rubbery. John Singleton - part-owner of Magic Millions - offers many horses for sale on account of (his) Strawberry Hill Stud - then buys them back at auction. Columbus was offered by Widden Stud at Magic Millions as a weanling and purchased for $630,000 by Peter Devitt and Les Gordon. It was then offered at the Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale and bought back for $1.2 million.

So maybe the original worth of the colt is a grey area. But on what he has produced at his racetrack debut even the inflated price is beginning to look like a bargain.
