Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Dylan Thomas

July 26th 2008 08:23
Perhaps we are blasé now about the quality of shuttle stallion that stands for part of the year in Australia. This season Coolmore will stand Dylan Thomas. This will be his first season at stud and he will stand in Australia for $44,000.

Dylan Thomas started twenty times over three seasons. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, this son of Danehill was no single season skyrocket with short but spectacular career. His list of wins include some of the best races in the world:

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Group One)
The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group One)
The Irish Derby (Group One)
The Irish Champion Stakes (Group One)
Prix Ganay (Group One)

His awards include:

Irish Champion 3yr old & Horse Of the year.
European Horse of the Year (2007)
European Champion Older Horse (2007)

Fifteen (75%) of his racetrack appearances were in Group One events. He was successful on 10 occasions (50%) and won a distances from 1400m to 2400m.

In an age when we are in danger of breeding out durability and toughness in our thoroughbreds, Dylan Thomas was able to race each month from April through to October (2007), finishing with the great prize of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with a typical display of brilliance and courage to hold out the fast finishing Youmzain.

To show his brilliance and toughness, watch the replay of the 2006 Irish Champion Stakes when the then 3 year old Dylan Thomas has to fight to beat the champion mare (European Champion Older Horse 2006) Ouija Board:

Dylan Thomas was a renowned Welsh poet. The extract from the poem below (about his dying father) is one of his best known:

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
