Craig Newitt - a style all his own
words and photographs by Neil Murray
There is no more distinctive riding style among Victorian jockeys than that of Craig "Froggy" Newitt. No need to know his colours or his saddlecloth; his whip action and special movements on a horse make him stand out. On Saturday at Caulfield he rode one winner - the Lee Freedman trained, Gallant Lady. Craig had the 4 yo chestnut mare in front all the way down the straight in the 2400 metre Catanach Jeweller's Handicap and staved off a determined challenge by Darren Gauci on Geejayhaitch to win by a neck on the line.
This series of photos below show Craig in the lead on Gallant Lady, displaying his unique riding style - the windmill left handed whip action, the hunched posture, and the right arm extended along the horse's neck, with the steadying touch of spread fingers. And his style certainly works well. He currently sits second on the overall Victorian jockey list this season with 103 wins, and third on the metropolitan jockey premiership with 40 wins.
