Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Pass the Cigar?

Curlin returned to dirt track racing and duly won on debut at Saratoga, overcoming some early interference to round up Past The Point and go on to win the Group One $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga.

"He seemed to be bounced around a bit, but he was a big enough horse to stay up in there and hold his spot," winning trainer Steve Asmussen said. "Halfway down the backside, you could tell Robby was very comfortable with him and we were okay from there."

This win places Curlin on career earnings of $9,796,800 and second only now to Cigar on $9,999,815 on the list of greatest money earner of all time.

Although Curlin was not disgraced on turf it is obvious that his preference is for dirt.

Curlin's next start will be in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park and victory will push him above $10 million in earnings and past Cigar as the greatest money earner of all time.

As a prelude to Curlin's debut at Saratoga the NYRA put together an elaborate webpage: Curlin's Corner. This page has statistics and photographs galore, with a blog by jockey Robby Albarado and podcasts from trainer Steve Asmussen and even Curlin's exercise rider (Carmen Rosas) and 'chaperone' Amy Kearns.

In addition it has a complete race history of his races in replay and videos of his workouts leading up to the Woodward Stakes.

This page is a treat for anyone interested in the deeds and exploits of Curlin.
