Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

No surprise: Curlin Eclipses opposition (again)

January 27th 2009 05:45
It was no surprise to see Curlin win consecutive Eclipse Awards for Horse Of The Year. He dominated the voting and secured more than double the votes secured by second placed Zenyatta. Both second and third placed horses, Zenyatta and Big Brown respectively, easily won their own divisions of Older Female and Three-Year-Old Male. But it was interesting to see Zenyatta defeat Big Brown by a substantial margin in voting for horse of the year. Hard to imagine this midway through last year when Big Brown had secured two legs of the Triple Crown and was a crowd and media darling. The close of the year saw Curlin as gallant as ever, and the aura surrounding Zenyatta ever growing (she is an early favourite to win Horse Of The Year in 2009) - but Big Brown was missing in action.

Horse racing is made more interesting by the longevity of champions. Shooting stars will be judged accordingly by expert and fan alike.

The ill-fated Eight Belles was runner-up in the Three-Year-Old Fillies Award; while English St Leger winner Conduit easily won the Male Turf Horse Award, leaving the best grass horses that the US has to offer a long way behind.
