The Cup

Damien Oliver confirmed today that he will be employed as a technical and racing adviser on the film to be shot by Simon Wincer (director of Phar Lap and Free Willy) about his nightmare life-journey, then fairytale win, in the 2002 Melbourne Cup aboard the Irish stayer, Media Puzzle. He has just finished reading and assessing the script for the movie (to be shot in September) and is pleased with the accuracy of the writing. Although not a literal interpretation of events, it marries the drama and truth to create a narrative that Damien is pleased to be associated with, in addition to taking an active role in its production.

The story is based on the tragedy and drama of the Oliver family with Damien's brother Jason dying just five days before Media Puzzle's victory. It is a story with great cinematic scope, and narrative depth, with the father of the boys, Ray, also being killed in a racetrack fall in 1975. Shades of Shakespeare - shades of Hollywood.
Jason was brain dead and Damien and his mother had the traumatic decision to make to cease life support (and Jason's life). This was only days after the Bali bombings and it was a time of heightened emotions throughout Australia.
Who could forget Damien's look to the heavens when he crossed the finish line first aboard Media Puzzle. Most of Australia shed a tear.
British actor Ray Winston has been signed to play Media Puzzle's renowned Irish trainer, Dermot Weld. Winston has starred in the most recent Indiana Jones (Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull); The Departed; Beowulf and Sexy Beast - to name just a few films from his career.
Simon Wincer was under pressure to cast a foreign star to play Damien in the film (he doesn't really look like Tobey Maguire, does he). But instead Australian actor Stephen Curry has been signed. Curry recently won a Logie for his portrayal of Graham Kennedy in The King, and was also a star in the hit movie, The Castle.
I wonder if Stephen Curry can ride?
