Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Danehill Dancer

Yesterday I looked at Aidan O'Brien's exceptionally talented 2 year old Mastercraftsman. Today I will look at his sire, Danehill Dancer.

DANEHILL DANCER (IRE), B. c. 1993, Danehill -- Mira Adonde, by Sharpen Up.

Like his son Mastercraftsman, Danehill Dancer also won the Group 1 Leopardstown Phoenix Stakes and the Group 1 Irish National Stakes at the Curragh. At three he won the Group 1 Deauville Prix Maurice de Gheest and Group 3 Newbury Greenham Stakes. In total he would have 4 wins from his brief 11 race career. But it is a stud where this bay son of Danehill has flourished and gone from strength to strength.

Standing as a shuttle stallion at Coolmore in Ireland and Australia, Danehill Dancer has made a significant impact on the racing scene in both Australia and Europe. Danehill Dancer stands in 2008 in Ireland for a service fee of 115,000 Euros. In Australia his 2008 fee is $110,000.

Danehill Dancer is currently the sire of 10 Group One stakeswinners:

Private Steer has been his greatest success to date. This brilliant mare won 12 stakes-races (3 at Group 1) from 1100 to 1600m.

Choisir was from the same 1999 crop and his exploits in Australia and England saw him record 5 stakes wins (2 at Group 1) and in the process earn a reputation as a wold class sprinter. He looks set to carve out a success story for himself at stud.

Mastercraftsman quickly rocketed up the roster of best and his unbeaten 4 starts (to date) in his 2 year old year - and early favouritism for the English 2000 Guineas of 2009 indicate that he may have further heights still to come. A very impressive colt.

At number four we have the exciting grey colt, Light Fantastic. Previously undefeated before running 4th behind superstar Weekend Hussler, he still appeals as a horse with great scope for improvement. The bulk of Danehill Dancer's progeny have been successful up to one mile (1600m) - but perhaps like VRC Oaks winner Arapaho Miss - extra ground may prove to be his forte.

The complete list of Danehil Dancer's Group One winners:
