Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Sha Tin Jockey Challenge

October 25th 2010 08:52
Early betting on last Sunday's Jockey Challenge at Hong Kong's Sha Tin Racecourse had Darren Beadman favourite at $2.10 with Douglas Whyte hot on Darren's heals at $2.50. But at the end of what was a tough competitive day, neither prevailed, and it was long shot Keith Yeung, quoted at $100 early, who took out the honours, riding a double and two thirds.

Beadman, just back from suspension had an excellent book of rides on paper. Three of them came close claiming a second and two thirds. Darren's only win came on King Al Akbar who notched up a second consecutive win at Sha Tin. Whyte also had an impressive book of rides. He came close with four placed rides, but broke through for a win on only one - Lion's Fortune in the first race.

A rather wistful Derek Yeung brings Gold Rush back to scale. His second win later in the day notched up the jockey challenge and brought more of a smile to Derek's face.

Yeung got his first winner when he rode a very smart race on Gold Rush in the fourth, exploding through a gap between horses at the 150 metres to hit the line hard for a three quarter length win. Keith had to wait until the last race on the card to boot $10 chance, Hot Shot, home and seal the Jockey Challenge.
