Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Striking black gelding Davcon was a most impressive winner of the Winter Championship Heat (over 1500m) held at Cranbourne last Sunday. Ridden by Michael Rodd he was allowed to find his feet and settled well back in the small field.

Rodd produced Davcon before the home turn and he round up his rivals with ease and went on to record a very soft 3.5 length win. Trainer Heath Conners informed Michael Rodd of the long range plans of the 4 year old Anglia gelding before booking him for this ride. The Winter Championship Final ($202,000 Listed Race over 1600m) at Flemington on the 4th of July is the target - and Rodd is definitely set to stay aboard.

Davcon produced his best speedfigures as a 3 year old when an unlucky second behind quality performer Barbaricus in the Stutt Stakes (Group Two 1600m) at Moonee Valley. Subsequently he would run an impressive 4th in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) behind the champion Weekend Hussler - with the now sprinting sensation Scenic Blast in second place.

After his brilliant Spring it was discovered that as an entire he was pinching himself and subsequently not stretching out. He was then gelded and has taken time to recapture the performances that identified his potential when a 3 year old.

This could be the campaign that begins to return Davcon to where he was a younger horse.

Neil Murray captured this series of photographs of Davcon winning at Cranbourne. This striking black gelding has a powerful physique and splash of white blaze. A very impressive horse in many respects.
