Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The Equestrian and the Apprentice

July 19th 2011 05:12
It was a day of well deserved doubles at Caulfield on Saturday the 16th of July.

Trainer David Brideoake secured an early double, opening his account in race 1 with his ultra-consistent middle-distance mare Dance With Her in the 2000 metre The Saturday Age Life&Style Cup. Ridden by Dwayne Dunn, the 4 year old bay daughter of Al Maher camped just off the strong pace and ran down Abitofado in the final 100 metres to win her 3rd metropolitan race this campaign. Like Joe Pride in Sydney, David Brideoake is a very accomplished trainer of fillies and mares.

In race 3 the Brideoake trained Biancon Rose won her first Saturday metropolitan race when successful in the Selangor Turf Club Handicap over 1200m. Ridden by apprentice Daniel Stackhouse (this the first winner of his own double) the very talented daughter of Bianconi was tardy away, but powerful in the run to the line in scoring a narrow but impressive victory. There a more wins in store for this filly.

David Brideoake’s other representative at Caulfield was his stable star, the 3 year old filly Warm Love. Resuming in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes the impressive daughter of Octagonal raced on the speed and finished a meritorious 3rd. She will improve considerably with race fitness - remembering back to her final run before spelling when she finished 3rd at Group One in the Lightning Stakes (1000 metres) behind champion sprinters Black Caviar and Hay List.

Daniel Stackhouse completed his double with a great front-running ride on the Peter Moody trained Mr Make Believe in race 8. This was the 4th consecutive win for the grey son of Commands who is building quite a reputation. Stackhouse is a New Zealand apprentice currently on loan to Peter Moody in Melbourne. So successful has been his initial 3 month loan - riding 14 winners from 52 rides - that he has applied to extend his stay with Peter Moody in Australia for an additional 6 months.

Additional information:

David Brideoake did not serve the usual apprenticeship into racehorse training. He came to the ranks not as a jockey grown too heavy, or as a stablehand working from the bottom up to become foreman (before dreaming larger again). David Brideoake, quite literally, rode a different pathway. In 1990 David Brideoake was made a member of the Australian Show Jumping team, representing Australia throughout Europe, Japan, and America. In 1992 David was named as Captain of the Australian Show Jumping team. In 1994 he was a reserve for the World Champion Team, while in 1995 he successfully competed in Europe. In 2000 David was short-listed for the Sydney Olympic Games Team.
