Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Victorian jockey Dean Yendall is having a crackerjack season. He currently leads the Victorian country jockey premiership with 77 wins, ten ahead of Linda Meech.  He's second to Luke Nolen on the total Victorian wins list and has eleven city winners to his credit this season.

Dean really excels at riding multiple winners at a single meeting. A few weeks ago at Hamilton he rode five winners, a feat he has done twice previously. Added to that outstanding record, he also shares the record for the most number of winners on a day on a Victorian track at six. He rode the six on 5 July 2010 to share the record with three other jockeys.

Dean is based at Horsham and does much of his riding at North Victorian tracks. But his skill is well recognised by leading metropolitan trainers and he's been getting plenty of city bookings of late. last Saturday at Caulfield he was booked for a full card of eight rides. Success came for Dean on the Mark Kavanagh trained Cat's Pyjamas in the Betfair Handicap over 1200 metres.

Dean looks well placed to take out this season's country championship and to ride a few more city winners into the bargain.
