Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Matthew Chadwick had a meteoric rise into the senior jockey ranks in Hong Kong when he took just one year and three weeks to ride the benchmark 70 winners, outride his claim, and graduate as a senior jockey. Reaching this benchmark is a celebrated occasion in the life of a jockey in Hong Kong as they make their transition into senior ranks.

Derek (KC) Leung, at twenty-two, reached the graduation benchmark this week when successful on the Tony Millard trained Star Of Fame in the Black’s Link Handicap (1200 metres) at Happy Valley on June the 1st. This was the first success for the 7 year old Star Of Fame in the 2010/2011 season from 15 starts.

Derek has ridden Star Of Fame only 4 times from his 28 race starts across two seasons - now resulting in 2 wins. Star Of Fame has only registered 3 wins across this time - with Champion Apprentice M Yeung having the only other success in the period. The success of Derek Leung on this rarely winning sprinter is a testament to his skills as a jockey.
