2010 Dubai World Cup
March 29th 2010 01:03
Gloria de Campeao held on bravely to win the world’s richest thoroughbred race, the $US10 million Dubai World Cup (Group 1 - 2000 metres) by the barest possible margin. The runner-up, South African longshot (and only a winner at Group 3) Lizard’s Desire flashed home to seemingly snatch an unlikely victory - with jockey Kevin O’Shea celebrating victory prematurely and mistakenly. The difference between winning and losing $US4 million - with connections of Gloria de Campeao receiving $US6 million - and those of Lizard’s Desire $US2 million.

“I thought I had won but as we past the post, I looked across and the second jockey was celebrating, so I thought I’d keep quiet and wait for the result. The horse settled in front and I dropped my hands 300 meters out and asked him to kick on. He was so brave and this is all just a dream.” - winning rider Tiago Pereira as reported on Dubai Racing Club.
“If he’s alone after he’s taken the lead and no one comes after him, it is so difficult to catch him. He wants to fight.” - trainer Pascal Bary.
“It’s a very bitter pill to swallow, but I’ve got to swallow it - when I looked up it was just after the [finish] line and I was in front and I thought I’d got it. It’s hard to take. The horse gave me everything but the winner got it soft up front.” - rider of Lizard’s Desire, Kevin O’Shea.
Multiple Group One winning mare Dar Re Mi was brilliant in winning the Sheema Classic (2400 metres - Group One - on turf). Ridden a cool race by outstanding young jockey William Buick this John Gosden trained mare stormed home in the straight for a well deserved win. In 2009 Dar Re Mi won the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes, and the Group One Yorkshire Oaks - but was controversially disqualified after winning the Group One Prix Vermeille (one of the lowlights of French racing in recent years).
“It doesn’t get any better, does it. Dar Re Mi gave me so much confidence. … When I went for [the lead], she found another gear every furlong. She kept picking up for me all the way.” - William Buick.
“You know with an American horse [Presious Passion] you’ll get a proper pace,” “William sat chilly at the top of the lane—it’s a long straight here, you don’t want to be in a big hurry—and he timed it to perfection. Well done to him, and an outstanding performance by the filly.” - trainer John Gosden.
