Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Eagle Regiment won the Chevalier Lifts & Escalators handicap over 1000 metres under Olivier Doleuze. - Woody Leung.

It’s a two-horse-war with Eagle Regiment (Olivier Doleuze - white cap) and Blaze King (Matthew Chadwick -closest to camera) going stride-for-stride. The official photo shows both jockey and saddle-cloth on Blaze King ahead - but it’s Eagle Regiment stretching out to win by a nose.

Eagle Regiment, reunited with his preferred straight-track 1000 metre trip at Sha Tin, went on to register his 5th win from 9 starts when defeating Blaze King (Matthew Chadwick) by a nose in the Chevalier Lifts & Escalators Handicap.

Only once has Eagle Regiment finished further back than second - this coming at his previous start when an inglorious 11th at Sha Tin over the 1200 metre trip around a turn.

Both trainer Manfred Man, and jockey Olivier Doleuze, believe that eventually Eagle Regiment will manage the test of extra distance and turn - but for now they can bask in the glory of the second time Eagle Regiment has recorded a nose victory from his 5 career wins.

update to archive:

Subsequent to this win Eagle Regiment went on to win the HKG1 The Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup - also over 1000m.
