Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Epsom Handicap

At one time I produced a speedguide for Sydney racing as well as for Melbourne.

I still provide the speedfigures to clients so they can assess the Sydney races as they wish - but I now concentrate on Melbourne.

Below is the 'speed best' and 'best recent speed' horses for the Epsom Handicap. I have omitted the speedfigures in this instance.

'Speed best' indicates best performance over past 24 months. It is almost the same as a Timeform rating - excpet it is speed based.

'Best recent speed' indicates best speed performance at past 4 runs.

It is just one race in isolation - but it may assist if you are interested in Sydney racing today.

Randwick Epsom Handicap (race 8):

Speed best:   Niconero; Mentality; Reigning To Win; Gallant Tess; Raheeb; Theseo; Bank Robber.

Best recent speed performance:   Gallant Tess; Mentality; Raheeb; Theseo; Bank Robber; Kiloton; Niconero; Reigning To Win; Kick’n’Chase; Judged; Road To Rock.

Results:

1st Theseo $9.90; $3.80
2nd Bank Robber $3.00
3rd Gallant Tess $3.40

trifecta $1047.10.

Top rated speed horse Gallant Tess was very brave at long odds. Raced 3 wide & still looked likely to chime in and win at top of straight.

But this does illustrate the benefits of using speed performance as a tool of assessment. The first 3 horses home were in the top 5 recent speed performances - that is they were performing better than their rivals at this time. And these were not the favourites either.

Best recent speed performance: Gallant Tess (3rd); Mentality; Raheeb; Theseo (1st); Bank Robber (2nd); Kiloton; Niconero; Reigning To Win; Kick’n’Chase; Judged; Road To Rock.
