Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Faces of Flemington

May 9th 2010 22:21
Flemington on a late Autumn May day is not quite the same as Flemington in November. The colour subdued. The horses lacking the class of their Spring counterparts.

But there is always something of interest on a racetrack.

I have a few images from my day at Flemington to share with you.

Matthew Ellerton - one part of the very successful Ellerton/ Zahra training team - with saddle in arm and leading fellow top trainer Mark Kavanagh back to the stabling area to saddle their charges in race 3. And it would be the Ellerton / Zahra horse Amaethon (a half-brother to outstanding filly Crystal Lily) to lead home the Mark Kavanagh trained Undeniably. Though neither won with Amaethon 3rd behind Sophrosyne - while Kavanagh’s heavily supported $2.10 favourite Undeniably was galloped on a stripped in running - and naturally failing under the circumstances.

Undeniably is a strongly built Fastnet Rock gelding with tons of ability - and he paraded impressively pre-race.

Holly McKechnie returning after walking the track. Holly had only two rides for the day and was unplaced on both Texan Warney and Scenic Buzz. It is good to see Holly back riding again after a three year disqualification.

Winner of race 5 the AGL Renewable Energy Trophy (1620m) was the impressive 4 year old grey gelding No Jurisdiction. Trained by Danny O’Brien this Secret Savings gelding is a consistent performer on metropolitan Melbourne tracks. And a very impressive individual he is.
