Champions clash

This weekend there are two races of great interest in the northern and southern hemisphere. Both races are considered match races, and both races resume a battle from a previous encounter.

In Ireland Aidan O'Brien's Duke Of Marmalade will once again do battle with champion 3 year old New Approach in the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes (Group One) at Leopardstown, over one mile and two furlongs. Round one went to Duke Of Marmalade when he relegated New Approach into third placing in the Juddmonte International at Newmarket, making it the fifth Group One victory for Duke Of Marmalade this campaign.
Aidan O'Brien has won the past three Irish Champion Stakes with Oratorio in 2005; and then consecutive victories by Dylan Thomas in 2006 & 2007.
Earlier this week the bookmakers suspended betting when a flood of money came for New Approach. There were strong doubts that the rematch would take place as the flood of money came with the flood of rain that made an appearance from Duke Of Marmalade less likely. But it now appears likely (barring further heavy downpours) that round two will take place.
The two dominate the betting and Aidan O'Brien has also added Red Rock Canyon and King Of Rome as he searches for his 19th Group One victory this year. It is not so much that O'Brien will have one third of the runners - as only Duke Of Marmalade is a serious contender - but O'Brien may once again come under scrutiny for 'team riding'. There is a current inquiry into the Ballydoyle use of pacemakers - this not so unusual or wrong - as long as they do not drift and allow a passage for a more fancied stablemate. Red Rock Canyon has been used as a pacemaker in many of Duke Of Marmalade's win this season - and will set the pace again at Leopardstown this weekend - but it is his last performance in the Juddmonte Stakes that has come under scrutiny by the British Horseracing Authority - with Red Rock Canyon making the speed until shifting away from the rail around 800m from home to allow a dream run through for Duke Of Marmalade.
Duke Of Marmalade has drifted from odds-on, and a recent market from Ladbrokes has Duke Of Marmalade at even money; New Approach at 5/4; and King Of Rome next best at 12/1. The other Ballydoyle entry Red Rock Canyon is quoted at 100/1.
In Melbourne on Saturday a similar situation and interest surrounds the rematch of champion Weekend Hussler and rising star Light Fantastic, who will clash again in the Makybe Diva Stakes 1600m (Group Two) at Flemington. Round one went to Light Fantastic who narrowly won the Liston Stakes (Group Two) at Caulfield after cutting the corner. There was very little between them at the finish and Weekend Hussler had raced under an injury cloud.
Earlier betting in the week had little between the two stars with $2.00 and $2.30 being quoted - but a flood of money has arrived for crowd-favourite Weekend Hussler.
Currently at TAB Sportsbet Weekend Hussler is $1.90 favourite with Light Fantastic at $2.40; and next in betting being Zarita and Dealer Principal, both being quoted at $21.00. Although 11 runners are engaged it is looked upon as a definite match race. And I could not disagree.
So - hemispheres apart - reigning champions are being challenged for supremacy by rising stars. And the betting interest and support has been in both instances with the beaten horse from the first encounter. Tables to be turned.
A soft track would make Duke Of Marmalade vulnerable at Leopardstown. Perhaps a different result this time - but I'm still inclined to think that Ballydoyle will prevail.
At Flemington Weekend Hussler is backing up after winning one week ago. He looks more and more like a stayer and not the sprinting machine of last preparation. Weekend Hussler is a horse of the highest calibre - the equal of most on a world stage. I am expecting him to turn the tables. Light Fantastic is unbeaten and an exciting prospect. He will need to step up and improve again. And so far he has done so at every challenge.
This weekend promises the prospect of two great races.
Here is the video of the race in question: the Juddmonte International Stakes. Look for Duke Of Marmalade to gain the rails run from a weakening Red Rock Canyon. And watch New Approach finish gamely. Make your own mind up:
