Flashback to Flemington
July 12th 2010 06:02
The 2 year old event was won by the Darren Weir trained Refuse To Bend filly Royal Bender. This impressive win followed a narrow victory at her previous start on the new synthetic Pro-Ride surface at Geelong. Royal Bender sat just off the good speed set by Cyndiana Star - who had nearly all of her rivals off the bit chasing - and powered home to grab victory near the line. These two horses also had best speedfigures for this race with the winner starting at $7.70 and runner-up at $20.00.

Little filly Big Spirit proved much too good for a talented field of sprinters in the Henry Bucks Best Dressed Handicap (1000 metres). Craig Newitt had the filly coasting outside the short-priced favourite Our Baby Bonus (4th) and let her down inside the 300 metres to sprint right away from Happy Angel 2nd; with My Girl Helen 3rd.
Apprentice Jake Noonan had his first Flemington win aboard Royal Bender in race one - quickly followed by another win on the very talented Miss Lily Rose in the Mittys Rising Star Final (1800 metres). This lightly raced 4 year old Red Ransom mare was stakes-placed in the 2009 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville behind Gallica and Estee. She often finds herself running around the tight Moonee Valley circuit and I did believe that the spacious area of the Flemington track would suit her admirably. An impressive win after being off the bit early to hold a spot - then forced deepest around the bend while the favoured runners took shortcuts - she simply gathered momentum and careered away for a 3.3 length win.
Figure Of Speech finally returned to the winners list in the Banjo Patterson Series Final ($150,000 over 2500 metres). Figure Of Speech won the same race the year before - then went on to win his next start in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap at Caulfield. His win did not come without some drama as he - and runner-up Crabs - both lost their footing and broke free in the parade ring after being spooked by an advertising board on the fencing which came free in the high winds of the day. A strapper was knocked down and injured in the process and medical staff were called to attend. Both horses were examined by the club veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run. And such is the mystery of racing that these two horses would finish first and second. Figure Of Speech paid $15.50 for the win. Crabs paid $6.80 for the place. The exacta paid $413.90. I wonder if anybody witnessing the incident chose the positive omen, rather than the negative position?
