French Americain wins 2010 Melbourne Cup

Americain, an imposing American (bay or brown) stallion by Dynaformer - out of America - won a truly memorable Melbourne Cup today at Flemington.

Americain did his early racing in France, before transferring to the US for an unsuccessful year racing on unyielding firm tracks. Returning to France in 2010, master trainer Alain de Royer Dupre resurrected his career on the forgiving French tracks, culminating with a Group 2 victory in the Prix Kergorlay in August - before quarantine and a trip to Australia to plunder the riches of the 2010 (150th) Melbourne Cup.
I was extremely impressed by Americain's Geelong Cup victory where he would accelerate between horses with 58kg and narrowly (but easily) take out a ‘springboard event’ into the Melbourne Cup. Hong Kong based French jockey Gerald Mosse rode with extreme confidence on the day - and confidence for the future. It was then that I believed the 2010 Melbourne Cup to be a race between the champion So You Think, and the talented French raider (owned by Australians - to make it even more international in scope).
I love So You Think - and even in his defeat today he deserves only credit. Steve Arnold gave him a brilliant ride - but he was brought undone in the first 1000 metres of the race when the dawdling pace had the dual Cox Plate winner reefing for more rein. He still looked likely to win when he ranged up to take the lead early in the straight - but the early wasted energy told and the French invader swept past him. New emerging star Maluckyday rallied and chased Americain - gaining second placing ahead of So You Think. The indefatigable Zipping emerged late from the ruck and ran an heroic fourth - his third 4th placing in a Melbourne Cup.
A great race. Historical and emotional.
But that is the fable and the beauty of the Melbourne Cup. A special race that each year treats the expert and the uninitiated to another memory to carry (and retell) in the collective consciousness of Australian folklore and history.
