Friesan Fire: the Australian connection
February 10th 2009 05:34
Friesan Fire is quickly staking a claim as a serious contender for the US Triple Crown races.

Friesan Fire impressively won the Group 3 (Grade 3) Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, powering away from his rivals in the straight to win by two lengths. At his previous start Friesan Fire won his first Graded Race when a brilliant winner by a length and a half (in near track record time) of the Grade 3 LeComte Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Friesan Fire is trained by Larry Jones for Vinery Stables and Fox Hill Farms. He is a son of A.P. Indy and the second foal of the very talented Australian mare Bollinger. Her first foal, Grande Annee is set to race in the US this season after winning three out of her 5 starts in Great Britain last season. Friesan Flyer is closely related to the tiny (but mighty) Australian filly, Romneya, who returned for her Autumn campaign with a brilliant first up victory.
Friesan Fire was impressive stepping out to the 1 1/16 miles of the Risen Star Stakes after proving very adept as miler. He appeared to relish the extra distance. Friesan Fire is the first horse to win the first two legs of the Louisiana Derby Series since Fly Cry in 1994.
“When he finds the racetrack, he can really run. We used the workout (Feb. 2) to teach him to relax. It looked slow, but he finished fast. This horse is a late foal (April 30), combined with being an A.P. Indy, that usually means a late bloomer. We are pleased at his progress. We think his best is before him.” - Larry Jones, trainer.
"He's getting better each time he runs. We had some questions with him that had to be answered and he did that today. Hopefully, it will be smooth sailing from now on. We still haven't gotten to the bottom of this horse but we're going to shoot for the Louisiana Derby next month now." - Larry Jones.
"I had horses on both sides of me. When it opened up, I ran past both those horses and kept the pressure on." - Gabriel Saez, jockey.
