Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Here are a few images I captured from my time spent at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Yearling Sale.

Gai Waterhouse and Ross McDonald
Gai Waterhouse and Ross McDonald

Gai has not been an active buyer at this sale with only 2 purchases, consecutive lots 341 & 342.

341 a bay colt by Elvestroem from Doska for $30,000 & 342 a grey colt by God's Own from Drinksard Princess for $75,000.

Ross McDonald has purchased a bay Hussonet (surprise surprise!) colt from Aztec Hill for $60,000; a bay Snitzel filly from Alisa Free for $50,000; a brown Encosta De Lago colt from It's Who Deanie for $75,000; a bay Fastnet Rock filly from Lady Chivero for $60,000; a bay Snitzel colt from Meribel for $120,000; a bay Exceed And Excel colt from Pattie Royale for $65,000; a chestnut Snitzel filly from She Rocks for $22,500 & a bay colt by Al Maher from Academy Angel for $52,500. Very busy indeed.

The Ratki colt out of Afternoon Delight was passed in at $35,000 with a $45,000 reserve. Inglis have a 'make an offer' service to allow for a later sale.
