Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Hitting the Derby Trail with the Sham

A contribution for Thoroughbreds Worldwide and RacingWrite by Vicki L Vinson.

Sham won the Santa Anita Derby in 1973 but had the unfortunate timing of being a really good race horse the same year as the great Secretariat was on the Triple Crown trail. Sham was only able to finish in front of Secretariat one time in the Wood Memorial when he ran 2nd while Secretariat finished in 3rd. Santa Anita honors the memory of Sham with the Sham Stakes for 3 year olds and is considered the track’s first prep race for those horses hoping to hit the Derby trail. Previously run at 1 1/8 miles and last year at 1 1/16 miles the Sham was run for the first time this year at a flat 1 mile on the main dirt track, which is probably a better distance for this early in the season.

Out of Bounds with Garrett Gomez up in the post parade for the Sham

Out of the gate first and setting the early fractions was the Jerry Hollendorfer trained colt Longview Drive. Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Secret Circle trained by Bob Baffert was in close pursuit as he stretched out around two turns for the first time. Running mid pack was Out of Bounds with jockey Garrett Gomez wearing the well -known maroon silks of the Darley Stable. Out of Bounds is a great looking chestnut colt by the 2006 UAE Derby winner Discreet Cat out of the mare Unbridled Elaine who won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in 2001. Out of Bounds is trained by Eoin Harty who for a time trained horses in Dubai and remains one of Darley’s top conditioners here in the United States. Out of Bounds won by 1/2 a length in front of the favorite Secret Circle with the longest shot Longview Drive holding on for the show spot. Former jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. who was the regular rider of Sham was on hand in the winner’s circle to present the trophy to the winners.
