Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The Hong Kong Jockeys’ Premiership appears already settled for season 2010/11, with Douglas Whyte (66 wins) holding a commanding lead of 18 wins over his nearest rival Brett Prebble (48 wins) - moving ever closer to yet another champion jockey title. But the Trainer’s title for this season is far more competitive.

Eternal Beauty (pink sleeves - white cap with black band) looms up to claim Hawthorne and go on to secure his first win in Hong Kong

This weekend Tony Cruz trained another treble (his second treble in successive meetings) at Sha Tin, drawing now within one win of the leader John Moore who is currently on 48 wins for the season.

Eternal Beauty, a recent acquisition for Cruz (originally trained in Hong Kong by Francis Tsui), was one of the treble, winning his first race in Hong Kong at his 14th start over two seasons of racing. Skilfully piloted by Gerald Mosse, Eternal Beauty held a nose margin on the line over Hawthorne (M Yeung) who had attempted to lead all-the-way over the 1000 metre trip of the Crooked Harbour Handicap.

editor's post script:

The trainer's title was close all season, and as we all know now John Moore trained 4 winners on the final day of the season to get up and snatch a victory.
