Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Getaway Dettori

September 4th 2008 06:36
Frankie Dettori has not managed to ride even a placegetter in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at the past six years. His employer, Godolphin, have struggled to produce a horse with the ability to challenge for this prestigious prize in racing.

But this year - thanks to the deficiencies still of the Godolphin stable - Frankie Dettori has been booked to ride Getaway for André Fabre in the Arc. The master French trainer has won his country's biggest race on seven occasions - the most recent in 2006 with Rail Link.

Dettori rode Getaway to victory at his first ride on the 5 year old in the Group Two Grand Prix de Deauville.

"He's come out of the race fine and we were extremely happy with him. The Arc will definitely be the next race for him." - André Fabre

"It's up to André who rides but I know the owner will want Frankie to ride and if André wants him, that's fine with me, as long as Godolphin doesn't have anything in the race," - Ray Cochrane, Frankie Dettori's agent

The change of jockey was significant for Getaway as Frankie's talent of recognising tempo and dictating pace proved crucial at Deauville where Frankie always had Getaway well positioned before taking over the running at an opportune time and holding all at bay in the run to the line.

Getaway had been an impressive winner of the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in May, but subsequently failed at Epsom and at Saint-Cloud. This talented 5 year old was a close 4th (at 50/1) in the Arc of 2007 behind Dylan Thomas and will be looking to improve his result this year. Getaway is currently quoted at 8/1 for the Arc of 2008.
