Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The imported mare Ghostmilk continued on her effortless winning way this campaign with another dominant performance at Moonee Valley on Saturday. After easily winning on very heavy tracks at both Sandown circuits - Hillside and Lakeside - she found herself racing at the tricky Moonee Valley circuit for the first time on a comparatively drier (slow 6) rated track.

Showing the benefit gained from her first Australian campaign Ghostmilk won her 4th race in Australia. Her previous 3 wins have all been on heavy rated tracks.

In Ireland Ghostmilk was successful in 3 races - 2 of these on slow tracks - and one win was on a good rated surface at Naas. It might be that this half-sister to the highly rated Unsung Heroine (2nd behind Conduit in the 2008 Group One St Leger Stakes) is more versatile than once believed. She did produce the best speedfigures for the Moonee Valley meeting (those produced by Speedratings) and perhaps only really requires the sting out of the track to produce her best. And she would appear an uncomplicated mare to ride with 4 different jockeys riding her this capaign, including three claiming apprentices. The senior rider was the number one Moody jockey Luke Nolen. The apprentices were J Noonan; T Lovelock-Wiggins; and Jack Hill.

Last year trainer Peter Moody set her for the Listed VRC Winter Championship Final after her promising first preparation performances which included a win and 2 placings from her 3 starts priopr to the Winter Championship Final. She was ultimately unplaced on a dead rated track - finishing 8th of 16 behind the eventual Spring performer Gold Salute (who would two very unlucky placings when 2nd in the Group One Toorak Handicap - and 3rd in the Group One Emirates Quality).

Ghostmilk will now seemingly be weighted out of handicap mares events and a switch to open company in the short term is on the agenda.
