Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Birdie beats Rocket

May 17th 2010 03:53
For the second year in a row Singapore’s Champion Sprinter Rocket Man had to settle for second placing in the $1 million Group One KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200 metres) when narrowly defeated by Hong Kong visitor Green Birdie. Green Birdie did his early racing in Australia.

Perhaps Rocket Man's defeat was brought about by the heavy rain that fell during the afternoon that necessitated in a track downgrade to yielding 5.2 - or perhaps it was the fact that Australian representative Gold Trail went out strongly and proved very difficult to get past. So well did Gold Trail perform that he kicked on straightening and looked to have a winning chance at the top of the straight.

However Gold Trail began to fade 100 metres from the line, the 1200 metres on the wet track anchoring him on the inferior turf near the rails. Rocket Man gained an advantage and then settled down to battle it out with Green Birdie who had been stalking the speed. Jockey of Green Birdie, Mark Du Plessis, was a replacement rider for Australian jockey Brett Prebble.

Flashing home to take 3rd was another Hong Kong visitor in Happy Zero who is really looking for 1600 metres these days.

The other Australian entry Eagle Falls looked a strong chance just before turning as he moved stylishly between horses - but he failed to lengthen on the soft track in the straight.

Gold Trail is expected now to make the trip to England and contest the King’s Stand Stakes.

The win by Green Birdie continues the success of Australasian bred (Green Birdie was bred in NZ) sprinters in the KrisFlyer, with winners in past years being Sacred Kingdom; Takeover Target; and North Boy.
