Hay List
September 12th 2010 10:37
Trainer John McNair has trained Hay List for just three of his twelve career starts, with the giant Statue Of Liberty gelding winning two of these in the most impressive fashion. It was no disgrace when Hay List finished a close second to superior wet track performer Love Conquers All in the Listed June Stakes (1100 metres) at his first appearance for McNair. Subsequently Hay List would travel from NSW to Queensland where he would demolish a strong field in the Group Three Healy Stakes over 1200 metres - breaking a well establish track record when winning by 5 lengths and running 1 minute 8.69 seconds on the good rated track.

Hay List was a well regarded Perth sprinter with a big reputation, winning his first eight starts in Western Australia, over distances from 1000 metres to 1400 metres. His last start in Western Australia, then under the care of trainer Jim Taylor, was to be the Group Three Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100 metres). Hay List started favourite at $1.50 but was beaten into 6th position, pulling up lame after the race. It was at this time that the owners, Liz and Terry Davenport, decided that the future of the gelding lay in the eastern states. And indeed this has been proven correct. But long term the future of Hay List may be on the world stage.
Hay List is an enormous horse with a racing weight of around 600 kilograms, and a spelling weight above 620 kilograms. A feature of his racing is his enormous (seemingly effortless) large stride. On Saturday at Moonee Valley Hay List comprehensively defeated a talented list of sprinters in the Group Three McEwen Stakes over 1000 metres on a slow track. The previous day the trainer became lost when floating his horse into Melbourne from his training establishment at Gosford - but on Saturday the big gelding had no trouble navigating around the tight Moonee Valley circuit for the first time. He went through his gears - although giving the impression that there were still one or two higher gears that were not required. The immediate future will see Hay List return to Moonee Valley on Friday the 24th of September, this time under lights, where he will attempt to win his first Group One race, the 1200 metre Manikato Stakes.
